So, last week I posted a character development meme for my Laudatio Turiae story. One of the questions was to show a character creator design, and I finally managed to figure out how to post the pictures of the character creators I made for my main characters, Lucretia and Marcus. Anyway, since it was pretty frustrating trying to figure that out I thought I'd let everybody know about that again, so please check out those posts if you're interested!! <3

I found this character development meme on[personal profile] eller's journal! It looked so interesting and fun, and I wanted to try it with the characters from my Laudatio Turiae Story (my very creative working title)!! I first posted about this a while ago now, so here is the intro post for it if you want the basics of the story! I'll be answering for both Lucretia and Marcus, the main characters who are a married couple.

-What genre of music do they listen to the most? Would people assume they would like that style of music or is it wildly unfitting to their appearance? (ie; cutesy pastel girl likes heavy metal)
Hmm idk what music people played/listened to in ancient Rome?? I feel like Lucretia likes music though, but Marcus is probably more neutral.

-In terms of power scaling in-universe, are they about as strong as everyone else, stupidly overpowered, extremely weak, etc?
They're about as strong as everyone else, but Marcus is a soldier so I bet he's quite a bit stronger than average civilians. But Lucretia also does a lot of sewing/weaving/etc because she is a proper Roman lady, and I feel like that would give you some muscles, so Lucretia isn't exactly weak but she's more average.

I saw this meme posted by [personal profile] osprey_archer and thought it looked fun! I think I did it on Tumblr quite awhile ago, so I was excited to see it again on here! Feel free to ask me about any of my fanfics/original works (here) or any recent stories in the tag My Stories on here. I'll be traveling tomorrow, and on an airplane in a couple days, so I'd love some questions to answer!

Pick a section from any story I've written, and comment to this post with that selection. I will then give you the equivalent of a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what's going on in the character's heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you’d expect to find on a DVD commentary track.

I don't think I've posted about this here, but I signed up for the [personal profile] sunflower_auction  fanwork auction to raise money for charities in Ukraine! There are many different charities it's raising for that help refugees and the war effort itself, and there's a week left for bidding. I'm offering all fandoms I've written for previously, and you can find my offer post here: xxx

I'm also going to write for a fanzine somewhat related to The Old Guard - it's to celebrate the other characters played by one of the TOG actors, Luca Marinelli! It is also going to raise money for charity, specifically the charity Pen Paper Peace which was started by Luca's wife and works to build schools in Haiti and other countries. It's the LM Fanzine on Tumblr if you want to find out more.

Now that I'm done with school again, I'm feeling very creative and into writing XD

I did the [community profile] inkingitout  writing challenge last year and I forgot to sign up again for this year, but I still wanted to keep track of my writing for the year! I didn't end up getting very close to my wordcount goal for inkingitout, sadly, but it was still a fun challenge and I ended up writing more than I had in a while!

Fandom Trumps Hate is running again this year, and I'm thinking of signing up, but I'm kind of conflicted. I signed up a few years ago, two times actually, but the last time I did I wasn't able to finish my assignment, so I don't want to promise something I won't be able to deliver. I'm definitely thinking of offering The Old Guard, Original Work, and maybe Merlin, but I'm still very indecisive haha XD

I also just saw something on my reading page about the Smut 4 Smut exchange, and I'm seriously tempted by that too...

Is anyone else doing either of those? I'm just very indecisive and I need someone to convince me lol XD

I love the prompt for today's challenge! In your own space, put some favorite characters into an AU, fuse some favorite canons together, talk about your favorite AU/fusion tropes, or tell us why AU/fusions aren’t your cup of tea.

I love AUs so much, and I love reading AUs that involve mythology, fairytales, and supernatural themes. I haven't written that kind of AU before, sadly, but I like writing fusions and crossovers between different fandoms, as well as fix-its and other canon-divergent AUs to explore what would've happened if something was a little different.

I'm gonna put some of my fave AU stories (plus my fave that I wrote) under the cut!

I'd love to try writing something similar to these AUs at some point, so maybe I'll make that another goal to try for this year!!!

I'm doing the [community profile] snowflake_challenge  again this year! Challenge #2 is: In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private.

So, my goals are to write/finish the fanfic ideas I had from last year! I had a lot of ideas that I only started to write, for multiple different fandoms, and I also have a WIP for The Old Guard, Some Similar Experience, that has been taking an unfortunately long time for me to write. Another goal is to do more original writing.

More real-life goals are to do more cooking and baking, and to do lots of self-care in the next semester!

This year I wrote and posted:
19 stories and 27,921 words!!!

Overall thoughts:
I feel like I branched out a lot with writing new fandoms, like The Old Guard, original works, and Turn, and I also definitely branched out of my comfort zone by starting to write smut. I've written subtler sex scenes, but not full-on smut, and it was definitely exciting (and nerve wracking lol) to try that out and share it. And it even got a good reception!

Looking back, did you write more or less fic than you thought you would this year?
More! I was in a slump at the beginning of the year, but I definitely feel like I got back into my usual enthusiasm for writing <3

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would've never predicted in January?
Probably Turn! I didn't discover the show until late in the year, and I didn't at all expect to love it as much as I did, but the character of Major Hewlett and his and Anna's relationship really spoke to me and made me emotional. I also didn't expect to post so much original fic, but it was really fun to write stories that were totally my own!

I'd also been wanting to write more sexual content at the end of 2020/beginning of 2021, but I didn't really expect that I'd actually do it!

This year's theme and the story that demonstrates this the most:
I think the theme is trying new/adventurous things in writing, and the stories that demonstrate that the most are probably Spirit Journey and Hold me closer, because they both have darker subject matter than I usually write about, and Steal My Breath, because I think it was the first smutty/kinky story I posted.

What's your own favorite story of this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?
Hmmm, I have a lot of stories that I really loved!! I think Scum and Scrapings, For the love of the sea, and Incurably Romantic are probably my favorites, though. Idk how many other fic writers re-read their own work, but I really like to re-read those stories sometimes!

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
Oh, yes. I took the risk of writing some darker content as well as more sexual content, and I learned that people just really enjoy smutty stories! I mean I already knew that, but I learned that people enjoy when I write smut too, and that it's actually really fun to write.

Best story of this year:
I'm going to say, it is destiny, The Artist and the Sailor, Scum and Scrapings, and For the love of the sea are probably the ones I think are the best.

Most popular story of this year:
My anonymous TOG story has 155 kudos, definitely the most I've gotten! Rose Red Pleasure has 131 kudos, the most out of the stories that aren't anonymous.

Story of mine that is most underappreciated by the universe:
Probably Perseus and Andromeda! Though that was written for a mostly-dead fandom, so I guess that's to be expected lol. Also Quaesitum, though that is also kind of an obscure crossover though, so that's pretty expected too.

My least favorite story of this year:
I think Hold Me Closer. I just feel like I didn't write it as well as I could have tbh.

Most fun story to write:
Hmmm, probably Incurably Romantic, For the love of the sea, and Escape.

Story with the sweetest moment:
I'm gonna say, It is destiny and Escape! They both have lots of hurt/comfort and are about the respective pairings coming together and comforting each other and being really soft.

Story with the sexiest moment:
I've written a few sexy stories this year, but the sexiest one was the Old Guard one I posted anonymously because I was very shy about it. I'm still very shy about it because it is... the kinkiest thing I've ever written. If you want the link though, I can try to give it to you privately!

Most "holy crap that's wrong, even for you" story:
Probably Hold me closer... that one was pretty intense lol!!

Most overdue story:
Some Similar Experience, definitely! It's taken me far too long to post, and it isn't even finished yet! It was from [personal profile] theoldguardkinkmeme , and I feel kinda bad for the person who prompted it for having to wait so long for the finished story :(

Most eye-roll worthy title:
Probably Spirit Journey haha, I couldn't think of a good title so I just titled it after the main event of the story!

Story that shifted my own perspective of the characters:
Scum and Scrapings was the first time I've written Lucius's POV, and that really helped give me more perspective and knowledge of him. And it made me love him even more than I already did!

In my original stories, especially Muse and For the love of the sea, I also got very attached to my OC's, and I kinda want to write more stories about them someday.

Hardest story to write:
Either Notetaking, because it ended up taking me a while to finish, or any of my smutty stories, because I overthought the way I was doing the sex scenes and getting nervous hahah.

Biggest disappointment:
Probably that I didn't finish Some Similar Experience before the end of the year! And also, I got a negative comment on another of my Old Guard fics, The Artist and the Sailor, because of discourse in the fandom that I wasn't involved in. :( I didn't take it too seriously, but it was just irritating that the commenter assumed I was so into The Discourse Du Jour. Honestly, as much as I love TOG and writing/reading fic for it, I really don't like a lot of the fandom that much...

Biggest surprise:
It was surprising how popular some of my stories for smaller fandoms got!

Most unintentionally, personally telling story:
I think Muse and For the love of the sea were very telling because the protagonists felt very personal and close to me. I'm sure I would fall in love with a lady knight or a selkie too!!

Favorite opening line (or paragraph lol):

Nicolò’s true smiles, so rare and only given to Yusuf, were like the delicate pink flowers they would sometimes see by the side of the road. Perfect, plush, peculiar but not unheard of. The pink was almost the same color as his lips. Yusuf told Nicolò these things one afternoon, after picking a bunch of them and giving them to him as a gift.

From Incurably Romantic! I really liked how poetic it was, which really fit with the theme of the story.

Favorite closing line (or paragraph, again):

“Oh, Edmund,” she murmured, and put her hand on his chest, right in the center where it ached with emotion. "I looked at the moon every night and hoped you could see it, too. It helped me feel like you were safe in some way if I could see the same moon you did.” The words pulled at something deep inside him, and he squeezed her hand tightly. She smiled at him. “I would love to watch the stars with you again soon, so you can explain them properly now that you’re home.”

Edmund smiled too. He finally felt safe, warm, and at home again because of Anna Strong, because of his dear Andromeda.

From Perseus and Andromeda! I usually have a lot of trouble with endings, but I liked how this turned out so sweet! And I just really liked this story in general.

In conclusion:
This was a very good year in the writing department! I'm enjoying feeling so creative lately. Hopefully that will carry into 2022, and it will be a better year all around!

Fic writing goals for the coming year:
As usual, I had a bunch of story ideas that I never got around to writing/finishing, so my goal is to finish those! I also have some more ideas for original stories, like the Laudatio Turiae story I've posted about, so I really really want to finish at least one draft of the LT story.

It has been... Forever... since I've been on here!!! School's been keeping me very busy lately lol but I'm on break for Thanksgiving, so I wanted to try and post at least a little and talk about what I've been up to.

I'm working on a research paper for an art history class I'm taking, and it's about a Fayum mummy portrait called the Portrait of Isidora! I love the Fayum portraits, so it's been an interesting project, but unfortunately I put a lot of it off until the last couple of weeks so I'm pretty stressed now :( I think it's gonna turn out really cool though, hopefully!!

I'm gonna try to put a picture of the portrait here, hope it works haha XD

Portrait of Isidora from the J Paul Getty Museum

Since it's Thanksgiving break, I decided to take the first day, Saturday, off. I finished and published one fic and one new chapter, which felt so good because I've been having so much writer's block!! The first one was an AU of The Old Guard (The Artist and the Sailor) and the other was a new chapter of my TOG WIP Some Similar Experience! Really hoping I can finish that before the end of the year... Only two chapters left!

Also, I've been watching a new show, Turn: Washington's Spies on Netflix. Apparently it's going to be taken off Netflix on the 30th, so we're trying to get through it quickly before then!! It's about spies in the US during the Revolutionary War, and there's lots of interesting conflict between the British officers and the "American" townspeople, and British loyalists and rebels. I'm probably going to get into writing fic at least a little bit lol, there are just so many characters and relationships I love.
silverink: writing aesthetic (Default)
So, [personal profile] verecunda  has encouraged me to post more about this story I'm working on, which is a historical fiction story inspired by the ancient Roman eulogy known as the Laudatio Turiae! (I think [personal profile] eller  was also interested in it from when I posted about it a long time ago!) I'm thinking of trying to get it published eventually, so I wasn't sure it would be ok to post about it, but now I think it would probably be fine to do. If you haven't heard of the Laudatio Turiae, it's a really beautiful, moving eulogy written by a man about his wife which you can read here X. I think the first time I heard of it was when I was doing research for a paper for class, and I immediately thought it would make an interesting story!

I originally tried to write it as a novel a while ago, but then I realized it would be more manageable as a shorter story (but maybe it can still turn into a novel!), and so I'm pretty much starting from scratch now and rethinking a lot about the storyline. The characters are still basically the same, though, and I honestly love both the main characters so much. I'm hopefully going to write from both of their POVs.

Also, I took an English class a while ago that had an exercise for getting to know your characters by writing a little scene of them going to the grocery store, and I'm thinking of doing something like that for my characters! Probably going to the forum, though, not the grocery store XD Maybe I'll share it here, too!!

Drop one of these bad boys in a comment and I will respond, without editing:
  • FIRST — the first two sentences of my current project
  • LAST — the most recently written two sentences of my current project
  • NEXT — the next line. meaning i will finish the sentence I’m on and write a new one, which you’ll get.
  • [insert prompt here] — you post a prompt, and i’ll write three sentences based on that prompt, set in the same time/setting as my current project
  • THE END — i’ll make up an ending, or post the ending if i’ve written it
  • BEFORE THE BEGINNING — three sentences (or more) about something that happened before the plot of my current project
  • POV — something that’s already happened, retold from another character’s perspective

So, I've written over 20k words so far this year!! Wow!! I've been a lot more productive so far than I thought I'd be, but I've been very hyperfixated on The Old Guard, so that makes writing a lot of words a lot easier XD

I'm planning on signing up for some more exchanges this summer, but I also have some more ideas I still need to write. I was a little worried I wouldn't be able to meet my writing goal this year, but I'm definitely happy with how I'm doing so far!

Hope everyone's having a good summer and staying safe and healthy! Xoxo

It seems like whenever I get stressed, I get more inspiration and ideas to write. And it's so inconvenient usually!!! I'm really glad I'm taking a creative writing class this year so I can be more creative and take out my stress with writing, and I'm enjoying my final story project that I'm working on.

It's a murder mystery type story with a plot twist in the middle that will hopefully be a surprise. We're also supposed to find a writing magazine and try to get the stories published, and I'm honestly really excited about that and I might send mine to more than one magazine just in case. I'll definitely make my family read it and see what they think, as well as having classmates review it, so hopefully it'll be good! *fingers crossed*

Unfortunately even with that, I still keep wanting to write fic too!! Mostly for The Old Guard because I'm really hyperfixating... That fandom just has so much fic potential though, I can't help coming up with more and more ideas tbh!!

Since I haven't written that much this year, I was hoping joining a writing challenge and community would help inspire me next year! I've signed up with a 75k word goal for fanfiction and original fiction. Feel free to join me if you like :D

Wow, I knew Yuletide was a pretty big fest, but I didn't know just how popular it is! I just looked at the number of signups on the AO3 collection page and it says it has almost 900 signups now... Should be a fun time :D It's also fun to see how many people I know on here are signing up and posting letters! (Signups close October 26th if you're interested and haven't signed up yet btw!)

I requested Frontier Wolf, The Mummy series, and a new show I just finished called Ted Lasso. I feel like I shouldn't talk about what I'm offering, but there are a few fandoms that I haven't written for in forever that I'm really hoping I get to do for Yuletide! Of course I'd love to write any of my offered fandoms, but I might try to do a treat for one particular fandom if I don't get it as an assignment. But, only if I have time and don't have to default! I'm gonna try not to get overly ambitious and set my expectations too high...

I only just found out about the [community profile] juletide fest (Yuletide but in July!) from a post by [personal profile] isis and I'm tentatively thinking of joining? I've been wanting more motivation to write (though I do have an idea I'm working on now!! ), but I'm also a little worried since the deadline is less than a month after the start and I'm not usually the fastest writer... The signups don't start until July 1st, so I still have time to make up my mind; maybe if anyone else wanted to sign up with me that would be fun! :P
