This year I wrote & posted:
18 stories & 54,924 total words! I tried writing for some new fandoms & pairings that I wouldn't have considered before, so it's been an exciting year for writing!

Overall thoughts:
I wrote a LOT this year!!

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you predicted?
Definitely more!

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?
The Eagle of the Ninth! I hadn't read the book in so so long, & it used to be probably my favorite ever when I was like 12, so I read it again over the summer & became just as enamored with it again. I'd forgotten just how much I loved that book, so I had to write some fic to properly celebrate & appreciate it!

This year's theme & the story that demonstrates this the most:
The theme of this year was probably just writing whatever I feel like? The story that demonstrates that most is prob "Oxford 99" XD

What's your own favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?
Oh that's a hard question... ! There are so many that I love from this year. I love "Small Talk" & the other Fancy/Morse stories I've written, & I also love "Chosen" & "Incidemus", so I don't think there's one story that I'd say is my favorite.

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
I don't think so tbh... I guess I tried to really write for myself, & I learned that those stories often get pretty popular!

Best story of this year:
Not quite sure how this is different from most popular story & favorite story, so I'm just gonna say "Small Talk" "Chosen" &
 "Incidemus"

Most popular story of this year:
"Small Talk" definitely!! I've never gotten that amount of kudos before!!

Story of mine that is most under-appreciated by the universe in my opinion:
I'll probably have to say "Oxford 99" tbh, though that is a weird crossover, so
 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My least favorite story of this year:
I don't think I have a least favorite?? That's like saying I have a least favorite child lol!!!

Most fun story to write:
Like all of them tbh!! "Small Talk" was amazing tho, & I haven't finished "Incidemus" yet but that has been amazing too!

Story with the sweetest moment:
Well I wrote a lot of fluff this year, but I think "Incidemus" prob has the most amount of sweet fluffy scenes? "Fireworks," "What's In A Name," "Tranquil,"
etc. were pretty much all tooth-rotting fluff tho... Idk, all my stories this year were fluffy haha!

Story with the sexiest moment:
I guess the closest to a sex scene I've written was in chapter 4 of "Incidemus"...

Most "holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
Hmmmm, well I didn't really write anything very dark, but probably the most angsty one was "The Wolves Come Circling" in which Morse has nightmares about The Tiger... That resulted in a lot of fluffy h/c tho, I can never just write straight up angst with no comforting afterward XD

ALTHOUGH in "E—E For What?" I did attempt some angst sans comforting so maybe I should count that instead...

Most overdue:
Tbh I think we know I'm not particularly timely lol, but "Bobsled Team" & "Oxford 99" both took a while to polish & finally post.

Most eye roll-worthy title:
Like ALL of them haha I'm terrible at coming up with titles.

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
Well "Incidemus" definitely gave me some insight on Esca & really made me appreciate his character more, "Bobsled Team" gave me insight on Martin and Theresa & why they both like each other, & "Small Talk" gave insight of George Fancy & made me love him even more!

Hardest story to write:
None of them have been particularly hard to write, but I had some difficulty with the latest chapter or so of "Incidemus" because it's sometimes hard to think of what would be going through Esca's head in some parts of The Eagle. I was also kinda nervous about "Love Firelight &
Warmth" just because it was very different content than I usually write & I didn't want to get things wrong...

Biggest disappointment:
Probably that I never got around to writing/finishing some of the other ideas I had! I often have too many ideas I think.

Biggest surprise:
I guess the weird/plotlessly fluffy stories of mine that got tons of kudos or some reason??

Most unintentionally, personally telling story:
I have several for many different reasons, but I don't think I'm going to tell... XD

Favorite opening line:
I often have a hard time writing really good opening lines, but I liked the opening for "Moving In Together" quite a lot:

"
The bright sunlight streaming through the thin curtains woke Jim up, as it did most days now, and he rolled away from the window with a sigh. He was almost surprised to see Morse curled up by his side, facing toward him, his coppery hair catching the sun and making a halo around his head. This was so new, this relationship of theirs, that he hadn’t quite gotten used to it. And he’d wanted it for so long—almost since the day he’d met Morse—that he couldn’t believe they were finally together."

Favorite closing line:
I feel like I had several good closing lines last year tbh! One that I really like was from "E—E For What?"
 :

The walk back to Bixby’s mansion was awkward and mostly silent, a complete contrast to how pleasant the rest of her evening had been. She missed the warm feeling she’d had before, Morse’s closeness, his hands in hers, and the softness of his lips. She and Bruce left almost immediately, and her eyes met Morse’s one more time, longingly, as she was led out the door, away from him.

In conclusion:
Happy New Year, guys!!

Fic-writing goals for the coming year:
I'm going to try and finish the first draft of an original fiction novel! I hope I can be as productive with that as I've been with
fanfiction this past year, but I feel like writing my own characters is going to be a challenge... Wish me luck!!! I'm also in the process of writing fic for The Silver Branch (which I'm apparently kinda obsessed with now) & I plan to finish "Incidemus"!

I've been working on chapter 6 of my Eagle of the Ninth WIP for a while now, & I think I'm finally happy with it!!! Featuring too much fluff & h/c because this is me we're talking about & that is my brand at this point XD

Read it here! ---> https://archiveofourown.org/works/15067289/chapters/39208893

I think the next few chapter are gonna be a little difficult to do in Esca's POV since we don't really see much of what he's thinking in the book when they're in the north. This latest chapter was kinda challenging too, but I'm still really loving writing Esca!!

So I’ve been TERRIBLE at keeping up with this, & I'm very sorry, but here, have a belated story for day 22! I found a song recently called Million Dollar Secret by Lucius, & it made me think of Phryne & Mac from MFMM, & then I thought this would be the perfect prompt to write this for! So yes, this is songfic XD Also probably very cheesy & not edited the best?? Hope it’s ok tho!! <3

Elizabeth MacMillan wasn’t someone who kept many secrets, especially not from her close friend and colleague, the Honorable Lady Detective Phryne Fisher. They both told each other most things about themselves, but now, Elizabeth had a secret that she had no intention of telling to anyone, especially not Phryne. It would surely be a million dollar secret to anyone who wanted to damage Elizabeth’s reputation, and Elizabeth hoped she could hold strong and not give it away.

As time went on, Elizabeth thought she was doing a good job of keeping this secret. She’d learned to be good at hiding the way she looked at women, and it was no different hiding the way her eyes were drawn to Phryne now, to the sweep of her dark eyelashes against her cheeks, her smile, her eyes, the soft curves of her hips and breasts. Sometimes, she couldn’t help indulging herself in looking a little too much, and when Phryne looked up and caught her eyes, Elizabeth had to glance away, with a hot burn of shame in her chest. Phryne was her friend, and she couldn’t help feeling that it was wrong to look at her like that.

But Phryne noticed something was different with Elizabeth, of course she did, and Elizabeth found herself being carefully watched by the lady detective more and more often, and doubtless she was learning everything. It was strangely exciting, being the intent focus of her attention like that, even though Elizabeth was worried and guilty and knew Phryne would learn too much.

Phryne never mentioned it though, just continued to give Elizabeth those long looks, and it was far more attention than she was used to from her friend. It made her feel breathless, suspended in air, and so Elizabeth didn’t say anything either. If keeping her feelings a secret meant that she’d get to keep Phryne’s attention like this, it was well worth it.

Somehow, Elizabeth started to feel like she could keep this secret forever. It would be easy to just not say anything, and Phryne would never know. Of course, that was not to last long.

A case had just finished up, and Elizabeth was at Phryne’s house, celebrating and winding down. Phryne was in her bathrobe, her makeup off and her hair loose, looking almost ethereal, and Elizabeth couldn’t keep her eyes off her. She could barely focus on what the other woman was saying, and it seemed Phryne was noticing.

“You know, Mac,” Phryne murmured, looking at her seriously, considering, “I wasn’t completely sure of how you felt, not until recently. You’re so good at keeping your feelings to yourself, I didn’t know if it would scare you off if I told you. And I really don’t want you to be scared.” She looked over Elizabeth’s face, unusually serious and quiet, and Elizabeth’s mouth felt too dry. This couldn’t be what she hoped it was. Could it? “But now, I’m quite sure.” Phryne stood and walked slowly to where Elizabeth was seated, smiling a little now, and Elizabeth could hardly breathe, her collar and tie were choking her.

Phryne leaned closer, and whispered in Elizabeth’s ear, “I really would like to kiss you, Doctor MacMillan. If you’d allow that.”

Elizabeth’s breath caught, and she just looked into Phryne’s face. She was still smiling, but her eyes were serious, questioning, and Elizabeth couldn’t possibly refuse her now, like this.

“I would love that,” Elizabeth told her, and Phryne touched the side of her neck, over her jaw and cheek, and kissed her fully and lustfully, leaving them both breathless. “I had no idea you wanted this,” Elizabeth panted, amazed and still almost unbelieving. “I’ve wanted this for so long—”

Frowning slightly, Phryne drew back a little and asked, “Why did you never say? I thought you must know what I wanted…”

And Elizabeth was laughing, half annoyed with herself but too happy now to care. “Oh, we’ve been idiots! I’m sorry I never realized.”

Phryne shook her head firmly. “Not you, Mac, you could never be an idiot.” Then she was smiling and smiling, and Elizabeth pulled her in and kissed her again, and again, and nothing had ever felt more right.

The Eagle of the Ninth (bookverse), Marcus/Esca (established relationship) - A little h/c set in the book right after they get to the Wall & Marcus collapses. Quote is from The Eagle of the Ninth. I didn’t edit this too much rip, sorry if this is Bad lol

Marcus set his bundle carefully on the table. “We have brought back the Hispana’s lost Eagle,” he said, rather mussily, and very quietly crumpled forward on top of it.

Alarm flared in Esca’s chest as he wrapped his arm around Marcus to keep him from falling completely onto the floor.

“Is there a spare room we can put him in?” He asked the fort’s centurion, Drusillus, grateful that at least this was someone Marcus knew. The centurion nodded, his eyes a little wide, and helped him carry Marcus to a private room reserved for important visitors.

“Is there anything you need?” Drusillus asked. “I can have a slave come in and see to him—”

“No!” Esca said, perhaps a little too loudly. He continued more quietly, “No, it is in my heart that I should tend to him myself.” With all they’d been through together, and all they’d become to each other on this journey—companions, and shield-brothers, and eventually lovers—it only seemed right that it should be Esca to tend to him now.

Drusillus nodded. “Come and tell me if you need anything at all.”

“Thank you,” Esca said gravely, and the man gave him a nod and turned to leave. For now, Esca thought, the best thing for Marcus, for both of them, was to sleep, and so he curled up beside Marcus on the room’s single, large bed, determined not to leave his side, and drew the blankets up over their shoulders. They both needed a bath urgently, but Esca didn’t give it any thought as he curled on his side and wrapped an arm over Marcus’s chest, pressing his nose into the hair behind Marcus’s ear. He fell asleep almost instantly.

***

He woke several hours later, and Marcus was still asleep, turned onto his side and facing Esca, his face pressed into Esca’s chest. A strand of Marcus’s black hair fell across his eyes and Esca brushed it back carefully, caressing Marcus’s face just a little. With the trials of their long journey, he’d lost most of the padding of flesh he’d had in Calleva and had become very thin, so much that the bones of his face stood out almost alarmingly.

As if he could feel Esca’s eyes on him, Marcus came awake, slowly. He buried his face even further against Esca’s chest, groaning softly, then opened his eyes and looked up at Esca, blinking a few times. Up close, Marcus’s eyes were stunning, impossibly dark brown and flecked with gold, though now they only looked hazy.

“Esca,” he murmured, then coughed, his throat too dry for much talking. Esca glanced around the small room and saw a cup of water on the table nearby that must have been left while they were sleeping. He slipped out from under the blankets for a second to grab it and take a few sips himself before returning to the bed and helping Marcus sit up and drink some, too. He buried his face against Esca’s shoulder when he was done, and Esca kissed his hair, his chest feeling full.

“Thank you. I don’t know what I’d do without you, Esca.” Marcus’s voice still sounded very rough, and Esca held the cup to his lips again so he could drink more. He did, then leaned in to give Esca a proper kiss on the lips, and though it tasted more of dirt and sweat than anything, and Marcus’s lips were very chapped and tender, Esca still enjoyed it immensely.

“I’m glad you don’t have to find out,” Esca said when they broke apart, and Marcus gave him a real, genuine smile.

“So am I, Esca…”

They were quiet a moment, Esca stroking Marcus’s hair gently and Marcus leaning into his hand. Sunlight was coming into the room’s single window now, golden and glorious, and it made Esca feel energized and content. It looked like the start of a day that he would’ve spent out hunting with Marcus if they were in Calleva, or just spent outside doing anything. He wanted to go back to that life again, suddenly and sharply, and found himself looking forward to crossing the Wall eagerly.

“Shall I find some food for us?” Esca asked, noticing how hungry he was for the first time.

“I can get up,” Marcus tried to protest, but as soon as he tried to swing his legs over the side of the bed, he gave a choking gasp, his face tight with the pain.

“No, no, stay here,” Esca beseeched. “I’ll find food and bring it back here, and then we can have a bath and change our clothes.” Something in his face seemed to convince Marcus, because he lay down again and nodded, his face apologetic. “Alright. Perhaps standing isn’t such a good idea yet,” his lips quirked into a hint of a smile, but one that still reached his eyes. Esca kissed him again, deeply, before finding centurion Drusillus and asking where he could get food. The other man told him, then asked, “Aquila is awake now?”

“Yes, he is,” Esca said, somewhat amused that he still addressed Marcus as his superior. Drusillus went in to talk to Marcus, and Esca went to the dining hall. He wasn’t gone long, and when he returned, he and Marcus sat in the bed and shared the food, talking quietly as the room became even brighter with sunlight. They bathed and were given clean clothes, and then Marcus slept through most of the afternoon, still exhausted and needing rest, and Esca stayed with him, stroking his hair. They could afford to stay here a few days, Esca thought; they both needed the respite, and Esca was more than glad to be able to wake up next to Marcus clean, safe, warm, and in a real bed.

RULES: List the openings of the last ten stories you published. Look to see if there are any patterns that you notice yourself, and see if anyone else notices any! Then tag some friends.

Thanks to the wonderful @glim on Tumblr for tagging me!! <3

1. Esca had fought in dozens of gladiator spectacles by now, and he knew what to expect, but he still despised having to kill for the amusement of these crowds as much as he ever had when he was first bought. It didn’t feel right, didn’t feel honorable, to fight just for the sake of fighting with no real purpose.
(GOOD LORD this has to be the most dramatic beginning paragraph I’ve ever written 😂 No ragrets tho) (In Hoc Modo Incidemus)

2. It’s late, well past the time Morse should have set aside the files on the latest case and gone to sleep, when he hears the knock on the door of his flat. He half wonders if it’s just in his mind, but he’s not that tired, he hasn’t even had much alcohol, so it must have been real. He stands, making his way toward the door and turning down the volume of his record player as he goes.
(I speak of love awake, I speak of love in dreams)

3. Oxford

The City of Dreaming Spires.

It was just as beautiful as Shirley had imagined, and the first few days she was there before starting her new job she spent just exploring the city.
(First Meetings)

4. When Theresa booked her and Maxie’s flight to Fitton, her first impression of the MJN Air pilots was that they weren’t too terribly professional. She couldn’t blame them for being skeptical about getting a call from a princess, though, and she was more amused than anything that they both thought the other was pulling a prank.

Still, she really wasn’t expecting to like them as much as she did.
(Bobsled Team)

5. It had been almost a month since Morse had taken his sergeants exam, and George knew he’d been waiting very eagerly for his results. He talked to George about it every night, worried that he might not make it, even though George didn’t think it was possible that he could take it and not succeed.
(Oxford 99) (one of my fave self-indulgent stories tbh)

6.“Y’know, you’ve never actually told me what your first name is,” George said, teasingly, and Morse felt his face flushing immediately. He’d hoped George wouldn’t care, but then, he’d have to be an absolute idiot to think a man like George wouldn’t want to know his partner’s first name. With as attentive as he was to everything else about Morse, from exploring the music Morse liked to asking about his difficult relationship with his family, Morse was surprised he’d let their relationship go this long—nearly a month and a half, now—without even knowing his name.
(What’s In A Name)

7. Hearing Monica’s knock at the door came as a surprise. Morse felt entirely undeserving of her company at the moment, and completely unequal to conversation with anyone. He felt so useless after Thursday’s order to go home, and he hadn’t been able to move from his position in bed for the rest of the day, too full of self-loathing and frustration to do anything. He should be working to solve the case, and maybe if he hadn’t shouted at Bright and Thursday, he’d still be able to.
(Another dramatic beginning lol XD ) (Soft Smiles and Soft Words)

8. “A career won’t hold you at three in the morning when the wolves come circling,” he’d told Trewlove, and as he said it, he’d thought of George. Sweet, caring George, would take care of him whenever he needed it, Morse was sure.

So weeks later, when Morse woke in the middle of the night to the sound of his own desperate shouts, the fresh memory of the tiger’s powerful claws scoring over his chest imprinted on his mind, he was relieved to feel familiar hands on his arms and his chest, and quickly started to feel if not calm then slightly less panicked.
(The Wolves Come Circling)

9. His first day of work at the Oxford CID was off to a slow start. He arrived at the station at eight and was told to wait until his new DI came back. George sighed and sat down at the nearest desk, which was impeccably clean except for a pen and a newspaper with half the crossword filled out. He flipped to the sports page and read the latest about last weekend’s football match, only getting through the first three paragraphs before he heard the door opening.(Small Talk)

10. Looking out at the sea of people here to celebrate her husband’s successes, Elizabeth MacMillan-Carver felt proud. Elliot deserved this, he really did; it had been his dream for a long time to become a famous media and news source, even if it wasn’t always by the most honest means. The rail was cold under her hands; she turned to a passing waiter to order a drink. She sipped it and sighed; a few years ago, she never would have thought this would be her life, but here she was, the wife of a wealthy, famous man.

“I always wondered how I’d feel if I ever saw you again.” The voice behind her was sharply, shockingly familiar, and Elizabeth turned around, hardly daring to believe that she was here.
(something came up)

Well I think we all know I do a lot of Dramatic Beginnings lol! As @glim also said, I think I definitely establish the who & where & when in the beginning paragraph or so. I try to kinda make the first few sentences attention-catching so people want to keep reading. (Lol I think that was probably a tip I heard in an English/literature class at some point??) If anyone feels inspired to try this, please go ahead, & please tag me!!

Summary:

...as Esca stepped out into the arena, the seats were completely filled with people. As he looked around at them, he caught the eyes of a Roman man about his own age in the Magistrates’ seating area. The man was handsome, he thought, in a very Roman sort of way; his skin was tanned and olive, but his face had a certain faint drawnness to it that spoke to Esca of illness and pain. His eyes were bright though, a warm brown color, and he watched Esca with a hint of worry or nervousness that struck Esca as unusual.

AKA, the development of Esca's & Marcus's relationship as seen through Esca's eyes.

I saw that the lovely
@oldshrewsburyian had done this challenge and was inspired to give it a go myself! :D

Total number of completed stories: 13 (plus like 3 WIPs lol)

Total word count: About 31k 😱

Fandoms written in: Cabin Pressure, Endeavour, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Star Wars (WIPs are Cabin Pressure & The Eagle of the Ninth!!)

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d expected? More!! I’ve been so busy this year omg

What’s your own favorite story of the year? Hmmm what a question!! It’s hard to pick, but I really love First Meetings, “E—E for what?”, & Small Talk (plus the rest of the smalltalk series I’ve done)

Did you take any writing risks this year? Yeah I’ve taken some risks with just writing stuff for me?? Like just writing some kinda ridiculous ideas I come up with! XD

Do you have any fanfic or profit goals for the new year? I want to finish the WIPs I’m working on & I want to start writing regularly for some new-ish fandoms I’ve gotten into!

Best story of the year? Hmmm I’m not sure? Prob Small Talk since it got so popular?? Or any of my other favorites tbh!

Most popular story of the year? Small Talk!!! I have no idea how that got so popular lol! XD

Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: Oxford 99 tbh, that one was great! XDD And Love, Firelight, and Warmth!!

Most fun story to write: How can I pick just one?? Probably something came up, Fireworks, & Small Talk XD

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: I think Bobsled Team bc it’s the first story I’ve done about Cabin Pressure & I kinda found out some things about Theresa as I was writing her!

Most unintentionally telling story: …..I have a couple from this year but I’m not telling XD

Biggest disappointment: Probably that Oxford 99 & something came up didn’t get very popular! They’re definitely kinda weird crossovers, true, but still… Also I was sad that Love, Firelight, and Warmth didn’t get too popular, I liked writing Ace Luke Skywalker!!

Biggest surprise: The stories I basically just wrote for me getting so popular! That’s def something I’ve started to figure out about fic writing this year: stories I write for my own enjoyment also become popular with other people!
